10 - Wednesday, November 18, 1987 - North Shore News Locals elected te Reform Party council TWO NORTH Shore men were among the I! members voted on to the 24-member executive council of the newly formed Reform Party of Canada, at the fledgling political movement's recent founding con- vention in Winnipeg. Ron Gamble, party director for B.C. and Gordon Shaw took the seats along with two other B.C. representatives, three from Manitoba and four from Alberta. Seven North Shore delegates were among the 76 voting delegates from B.C. A total 262 delegates represented the four western pro- vinces with 30 per cent from B.C., 49 per cent from Alberta, 19 per cent from Manitoba and two per cent from Saskatchewan. Although media reports have focused on a bitter schism between party leader Edmonton manage- ment consultant Preston Manning and leadership hopeful, Vancouver NORTH Vancouver resident Ron Gamble...voted on to the 2d- member executive council of the Reform Party of Canada. With 21 per cent of Canadian asking who would make the best prime minister, and a weak vote of confidence for Liberal leader John Turner (13 per cent) and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney (19 per cent), Gamble thinks the timing is right for the new federal party. “We'll target the Liberal and Conservative vote and convince them they have a new home. There are a lot of disgruntled voters out there,’’ he said. Among the priority items in the conservative party’s policy agenda is a bid for an elected senate and other constitutional changes pro- moting Western Canadian interests in a united Canada. “The thrust now is to organize constituencies and membership and get the link of communication between the grassroots and ourselves,’” said Gamble.
