DAY WITH FEW exceptions, Canadian jurists, politicians, academics and media people do not understand freedom of speech. They pay lip service to it while ignoring the rape of | Fit or helping to destrey it. Vhat's why Ernst: Zundel was sentenced to 18 months for distributing a pamphlet, why members of the bar can advocate secret trials for “hate mongers”’ (lest foul beliefs gain credence) and why cheers are heard when Doug Christie's Canadian Free Speech league is denied a forum in Victoria. An example of what £ ain talk- F ing about was seen last week ina ¥ long CBC so-called news item in which ‘investigative reporter’ Rick Ouston put on a display of hunt-the-devil. The errors and idiocies of his ‘expose’? were documented here on Wednesday, but it remains to emphasize that if his targets had | been left-wing rather than right, his act would not have got on the air. He is in tune with the times, though — especially the CBC times. QOuston is probably too young to remember it, and too dim to care much about it even if he did remember it, but 20 years ago a national debate began that ended in victory for people who demand freedom for themselves but love to deny it to others. I refer to the passing in parlia- ment of the hate laws in which | Ouston apparently sees no fault. We have them because the Cana- dian Jewish Congress wanted them, and if it’s anti-Semitic to mention that, that's too bad. The hate laws are used selective- ly, just as their critics predicted they would be. In other words, they are applied by politicians (at- torneys general) when they think political yards are to be made. And if hate charges won't stand up in court, the much looser Sec- tion 177 of the Criminal Code is dragged out -- spreading false news, The anti-free speech mob has only to mention the words Nazi, KKK or anti-Semitic in accusing someone, and free speech pharisees who would bear arms in Pageant From Page 8 and remembered me from school,”’ she said. Dixon, who still lives in North Vancouver, was known as Katie Spees in those days. After she won the Miss North Shore title she competed in the Miss PNE contest. Although she wasn't successful there, Dixon did meet some prestigious PNE guests — celebrity Jimmy Durante, singer Frankie Lane and comedian Candy Candino. “T had my picture taken with Jimmy Durante,” said Dixon. “IT had to take my shoes off because I didn’t want to be too much taller."’ Dixon said another highlight during her year as Miss North Shore was doing professional modelling assignments, including the Christmas advertisement for B.C, Tel. the defence of freedom for com- munists to walk byon the other side of the street, Which is not surpris- ing, really, seeing that they are ex- perts in the double standard. Some judges don’t impress ine with their logic, either. In both the Keegstra and Zundel trials, the gents of the bench said that freedom of speech wis not at issue. But if it wasn’t, what the hell was? The judge in the Zundel trial even told the ‘criminal’ that while awaiting appeal he could not mention anything related to the Holocaust (the official version of which Zundel had denied). As one of the Toronto newspapers put it, this was ‘‘a stunning gag of a Canadian resident". The Oustons obviously believe that the hate laws are not bad at all, because they never investizate them or otherwise question them. This stunted view of freedom of speech is shared by the Art Kubes | and Renate Shearers of the B.C. Federation of Labor, who went into ecstasies when Zundel was prevented from appearing at the Empress, even though he couldn’t have done much more than talk about the Moonlight Sonata, But the Kubes are badly placed to cast the first stone. How many trade union leaders have not poured hate on ‘‘scabs”’ and employers? It is safe to chase people like } Zandel and the loony KKK, but f any investigative reporter with guts would ask why the hate laws were passed. why the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is worthless where freedom of speech is con- | cerned, and why Jewish and left- wing pressure groups find it so easy to tell Ottawa what to do. But don’t hold your breath, At the end of his prograrn, Ouston peered into the camera, piggy-like, and made some inane remark about what his right-wing targets say is freedom of speech. (His emphasis.) But what does he say it is? The hate laws? Witch- hunting? parades The only advice Dixon said she has to offer her daughter and the other contestants is to enjoy the experience. “We watched them at their fash- ion show (one held July 25 and the other July 27) and they all looked lovely,” she said. ‘*They're they're in the contest.” The Miss North Shore Pageant begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at Centen- nial Theatre.
