BOOK COMMEMORATES ST. MARTIN'S 75th ANNIVERSARY Local author expounds N. Van church’s history NAMING the contractor who wired electricity at Saint Martin’s Church is one of the many details author Roy Pallant spothghts in his history book on the local Anglican church. “Usually the workers are not mentioned in a book of this kind but for me that's someone's dad,”” said Pallant. “We're talking about people. It’s not the heads of state who make it work, it’s the ordinary people."’ Pallant, one of the church’s 400 parishioners, said he began resear- ching The History of Saint Mar- tin’s Church last August. “One has to write these things — social histories are absolutely essential.” The book, commemorating the church’s 75th birthday, was also written for Reverend Gerald Haworth’s retirement this year. “YT recognized 1 had a deadline for the book,’’ he said, “had | not, the book would be twice in thickness.”” Pallant said the book, a chur- ch-sponsored project, was Original- ly to be 100 pages, but it expanded to 180 pages. Rather than do a second prin- ting, the England-born author said he is considering Volume II, deal- ing more in depth with the people By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporier who founded the church. “One has to write these things — social histories are absolutely essential,’’ he said. Pallant said 16 copies of his his- tory book were ordered by the North Vancouver District Ar- chives. Although more than 400 were printed, he said only 40 are left. Pallant, who has a Masters of Arts in Community Development, was transferred to North Van- couver from Edmonton three years ago. At the time he noticed the need for a formal history book to be written on the church, and after 600 hours of research, Pallant found he had more than enough material to write a book. He collaborated with North Vancouver calligrapher Irene Alexander and artist Ken Pool, who provided the illustrations. Paltant said one of his favorite illustrations and stories in the book concerns the St. Martin's church bell. The bell was salvaged from the SS Zafiro, a ship which took part in the Spanish American War of 1898. Since. 1912 it has been hang- ing in the church’s bel! tower.
