WEST VANCOUVER jazz singer and songwriter
Rachel Paiement returns to the stage Sunday at

the Arts Club Theatre.

Singing in both English
and French in a concert. be-
ing recorded by CBC/
CBU-FM, Paiement’s return
marks the end of a five-year
hiatus from live perfor-
mances.

Since moving to Van-
couver from the East, Paic-
ment has confined her tal-
ents to studio work, back up
vocals and watching hus-
band Jim Vallance’s career
take off.

co-writer,

Based out, of Toronto,
Paiement was a lead singer
and songwriter with CANO
(Cooperative Artists of New
Ontario), 4. group ‘that at-
tracted considerable atten-
tion-with its versatile French
and English compositions
that defied musical

Paiement recorded five
albums with CANO before
two band members died, one

~ of which was her brother.

Speaking about her
absence from the’ stage,
Paiement said, ‘‘After leav-
ing Toronto, I virtually had

to start from scratch. In the’
East we were. well known,

Paiement predicts this fizst
concert is just a start. She’s
coming out of the studio and
going on to the stage.

She has already been ap-
proached about performing
during Expo, but says she is
taking one step at a time.

“I'm eager to start writing
again,"’ she says. ‘‘And |
want to write more in
English.’’

NEW TUNES

Her five-year break com-
bined with a heavy influence
of West Coast rock a roll
dominated by what she calls
the Bruce Allen Machine,
and a: perceived’ need .to
become more mainstream
will affect her new tunes,
Paiement say's.

“There wil | be no ‘power
chords in « jazz tune or
anything like that,’’ she
says, “but it will be a more
accessible type of j jazz."

‘ Paiement thinks an album

can stay right at home if and
when she decides on that
course.;

Husband Vailance has just
renovated and expanded his
studio. in their basement
where he and Adams are
working on their néw album.
