4 - Wednesday, February 27, his is something | frivolous about, seriously. Ou; subject is Expo. Let me confess something. First of afl, | am one of those British Columbians, perhaps rare at this stage, but certain to be ome more numerous, who has actually made money out of Expo Made money? Well, aren't 1 making money at the mo- ment by writing about it? Darn toots! And that’s the essence of the operation, folks! There are a whole bunch of people already making money out of Expo, ‘although Jimmy Pattison, the number one honcho, isn’t one of them. He’s do- ing it gratis. Thank you, Jimmy. What | really mean by “making money’’ is as a freelance writer who is called upon from afar to tell it like it is about Expo. I’m not th e only one,. by the way. There are any number of wordsmiths in B.C. who never got a call from an editor further east than Bur- naby or further south than Richmond in their lives who are suddenly having. to answer calls in the middle of the night from Australia and Switzerland, asking them what’s going to happen in Vancouver in 1986? «1 was talking to.an_ editor down east the other day about an Expo story—one, | Spring is in | the air and Moss is ever ywhere - Moss Killer special ‘ 4-20 kg Posh Moss Killer 2-20 kg Dolomite Lime All 3 Bags for 10°° ’ 9? * i 1985 - North Shore News by Bob Hunter can’t even get seriously let alone frivolously like I say, of many—and she wanted to know, come on, really, Bob, is it gonna work? Without any hesitation, 1 found myself saying: Yeh, of course it ist 1-can hardly wait! And, by the way, it will. Locally, there is this bizarre mindset that suggest (a) if you think Expo might work you must be some kind of Socred agent eager to stomp on the fingers of poor carpenters trying to feed their children, and (b) you must be oblivious to the fact that the 1985 World Exposi- tion at Tusukuba, Japan, is going to make everything that follows look like Boon- dock City, the view advanc- ed by futurist Frank Ogden. Well, hold it! Among the people I’ve talked to is a chap who was high. up in management ait the previous three North Amcrica World Fairs, and his comment is that everybody is going to be blown out of their chairs by what they see at Expo 86 in Vancouver ‘once. the wraps come off what is being kept secret so far. This is a guy with no axe to grind whatsoever, since he's not involved in the cur- rent project. Let me add that | have Spent a good amount of time i 10 am to 5 pm yakking it up with Bruno Freschi, Expo's chief ar- chitect, and while Bruno is always careful to keep trade secrets secret, | get a definite impression that he is not ex- actly expecting to walk away in disgrace from this ultimate opportunity to show his stuff. There’s the key. There are a lot of local people with that same feeling. The obvious example is Jimmy Pattison himself. Would he risk the credibility he has built up over the years on hare-brained scheme? You'd have to be hare-brained yourself to think so. It is easy to forget how much pleasure and pride Vancouver got out of the Habitat convention in 1976. For a moment, you may recall, we were the centre of the United Nations’ atten- tion. On the whole, we laid on a mind-boggling show, and it had its wee effect on the world. At Expo, we're going to do the same, only on a larger scale. I'm not saying this out of mindless boosterism, by the way. Gimme a break! From what few inside tracks I have, it is clear to me that this is going to be a great show, ONLY repeat ONLY MR.
