IS IT ALL that long ago
that the appearance of the
New York Cosmos would
guarantee at least 20,000
fans in Vancouver? Well, if
it ever was the case, it is
definitely no longer true.

Slightly less than .12,000
die-hard fans made their way
to the B.C. Place Stadium
Sunday to seed their 1984
version of the Whitecaps
carve apart a dour Cosmos
defense en route to a 41 win
in the Third Annual Spring
Cup.

And while any victory
over Cosmos is always sweet
for the West Coast fans, this
one surely must leave as
Many questions as answers.
While the on field product
appears just fine thanks, the

residue of discouragement
and despair from the off-
field antics of owners and
management appears to be
having a
effect at the gate.

However, there’s nothing
hke a good win or two to
help turn the tide. Under
coach Alan Hinton, the
not-so-new look Caps totally
controlled the game with the

front trio of Valentine,
Cross and Ward = carving
great chunks out of the

Cosmos defense.

Hinton’s biggest chore at
present could be adding
viable bodies to the roster.
While his first team - with
Englsh sweeper Colin Todd

still on the way - apears solid
and

creative, any injury
could cause untold grief.
And this is a team and a

league that needs no gnief.

On the field, at least,
Whitecaps appear to have
what's necessary to maintain
their pride and excellence.
Now it’s the turn of
management to prove the
same to the thousands of
fans who are sitting on their
wallets. _

And while speaking of
wallets, the fact that the club
has been in financial trouble
is NO surprise, but one must
wonder about the need for
the club to hire a full tame
fitness person. While she
makes a most interesting
addition to the team bench,
the reasons for her being
there remain most obscure.

But, that seems to be what
life in the North American
Soccer League is all about.
