Gi mailbox = A7 - Sunday, June 12, 1983 - North Shore News WV. council could learn from Hong Kong Dear Editor: In the past few months there seems to have been a considerable increase in the amount of coverage devoted to the Pacific world. You are to be congratulated. It is vital to Western Canada’s future that we become more aware of the trans-Pacific scene. I have just returned from my second month-long visit to Asia so far this year. I would like to share a few thoughts with your readers. First, we in Canada have gone too far in the direction of banning street vendor stalls, non-conforming uses affecting retail trade and services, etc. I would not want to see us move in the opposite direction to the extent found in Asia, but I suggest that a compromise would enable a large number of our unemployed to start little businesses which simply could not begin under our present excessive At HILLSIDE highrises in Hong Kong Your Clutch UNIQUE AUTO CLUTCH The North Shore's most unique Auto Shoppe. Second, I am = more convinced than ever before that our low density urban sprawl is wasteful of resources — particularly blacktop. We have suburbs sprawling over farmland in Langley and Delta which need never have been put there. A string of medium- rise clusters along the North Shore mountains could have saved all that wasted far- miland and provided the population base for an ef- ficient compact rapid transit system. I wish the entire West Vancouver. city council would visit Hong Kong and note that the Peak, at 2000 feet, has clusters of well designed apartment homes surrounded by open space and reached by cable tram. (While they do not have to contend with snow, they manage to contend with even more problematic torrential downpours during Photo submitted v LOOK SENSATIONAL... FEEL GREAT! typhoons). It is ridiculous that we stop all development at an arbitrary 1200 feet, but then encourage it to sprawl 120 miles to Hope and beyond. Third, we would do ourselves a service if we were to permit more im- migration of the industrious people of Hong Kong. A special program should be authorized in the light of the impending changes in that jurisdiction. I would suggest a specific mechanism: easier access for Hong Kong business-persons and trades- persons on the condition they settle for the first three years in Canada in New Westminster. I predict that presently-depressed downt- own New Westminster would be working to full capacity within three months of the implementation of such a program.
