In addition to both the men’s and women’s basket- ball squads, the Capilano Blues badminton team saw action last Saturday as it hosted a tournament. The team’s fortunes have been turned around under new head coach Janice Swansburg, who has taken the team from fast place last season to first place this year. Griffins lose fight-filled contest Lance Bradtey Contributing Writer THE North Shore Griffins just couln’t get a break in their 4-2 loss to Ridge Meadows Flames last Monday night. . Playing host to the PITHL’s best team, the last-place Griffins spent the first five min- utes of the game on their heels as they were outshot 7-2. Bur things started to look up with 8:08 remaining, when Jayson Taylor appeared to give the Gniffins a 1-0 lead. However, the goal was dis- allowed as another member of the Griffins was called for a crease infraction. With less than two minutes left in the firsr, Flames forward Mark Davies took a swipe at Griffins goalie Jordan Sigalet after the whistle. The Griffins players took exception and a mini-brawi ensued. As a result, Ridge Meadows ended up with four players sitting in the sin bin compared with five North . Shore skaters. Sean Sanderson scored a power play goal with ten scc- onds left to give the Flames a 1-0 lead heading into the dressing room. The Griffins were outshot 20-6 in the first period. In fact, the first-year squad went four- teen minutes without a single shot on Flames goalie Varion Kirst during a span in the first and second periods. Sanderson would add_ his second of the game just 10 see- onds into the second period. Ryan Arnold, the home team’s leading scorer, bagged a pow- erplay marker with just under nine minutes left to bring the Griffins within a goal. The tide was turning late in the period when North Shore was awarded a two-man advan- tage. Despite having the advantage the Griffins. power- play managed no shots in the final 1:30 of the period. The powerplay unit finished the night 1 tor 7. The Griffins started the third period on tire. Two min- ures into it, Andrew Russell went end to end and blasted a shor into the Ridge Meadows net. The Flames appeared to be backing down from the play until they resorted to the phys- ical stuff. Mike Rossa scored tor the Flames on their third shot of the final period to give the Flames a shaky one-gual lead. With the Griffins applying nlore pressure with aggressive forechecking, the Flames again scored against the low of the play. Rod Allegretto scored the fourth and final goal of the game for the visitors, securing a 4-2 win. The end of the game was marred by a number of fights. Stefano Rossi, the Ieague’s leader in penalty minutes with 214, squared off against Ridge Meadows assistant captain Darcy Pinch.
