16, and the North
Shore Ad Hoc Day
Care Committee wants
North Shore parents to
be able to choose a
good day care centre
for their child.

According to the com-
mittee, “A day care centre
has the responsibility of

providing experiences which
invite a child’s_ interest,
Stimulate his creativity, and
satisfy his desire to explore
and discover. There should
be equipment and materials
freely available to the child
for his own use in his way,
within the limits compatible
with group. needs. It
provides for the _ full
development of his physical,
social, emotional and _in-
tellect needs.”

To find the best day care
centre for your child, the Ad
Hoc Day Care Committee
suggests the following:

Ask if it ts licensed:
Licensing by the local
Board of Health and Child
Care Facilities Licensing
Board assures you that the
minimum requirements of
safety, health, space, and
equipment have been
satisfied. The staff must have

a yearly medical certificicate
and T.B. test every two
years.

The supervisor is educated
in group guidance for the
young child, and there is one
adult to every eight children
ina day care centre. There is
one adult to every ten
children in an out of school
care centre.

Block Play - Is there a
generous supply of blocks of
different sizes, set out on
shelves, with plenty of space
for several children to build,
with interesting accessories
such as trucks, trains,

wooden animals and people?
Science - Is there a table or
shelf on which objects of
interest may be displayed? A
magnifying glass, a variety of
seeds, a milkweed pod,
growing things. Are there
pets to look after and feed,
such as a turtle, hamster,

Music - Are there instru-
ments available to individual
children’s exploration of
sound, as well as the group
experience in a circle?
Books - Are there books
available at all ames, with
table space and chairs for
comfortable viewing?

- A good quantity in good
condition?

- Aad about familiar objects
and situations to consolidate
the child's knowledge and
extend his expenence?
Outdoor Play - Playground
must be fenced and should
provide really strenuous
climbing, running, pushing.
