The right course for Xmas

It's to be hoped you've
taken my advice (from the
two previous columns) so to
heart that your Christmas list
is now down to just stocking
presents! Since the brochure
doesn't come out until the
middle of December, you
can't be sure you aren't
missing a good bet with one
of the brand new courses,
but how about a gift cer-
tificate for “the course of
your choice”. You'd find it
hard to give a more prac-
tical, sure-to-be-welcome
_ present. No need to know

the size, color or taste of
your recipient’s choice. Do
you realize you could be
thanked for life if your gift is
responsible for introducing
someone to a new life-long
interest?

For those who. are
especially dear to your
heart, you could consider
the joint present (no,
Virginia, not that kind of
joint). If your loved one
wants a camera but thinks
“shutter speed” means how
fast your blinds go up, a
course in photography

TOO THIN:

It can be dangerous

NEW YORK (UPI) - Being
underweight may be more
dangerous than _ being
overweight, and too little of
an enzyme rather than too
much food may make people
fat. recent medical studies
indicate.

In a report published Sun-
day. Newsweek magazine
said a team of researchers
tested 23 obese people and
found that in nearly all of
them there was at least a 20
per cent shortage of an en-
zyme called = sodium-
potassium ATPase.

ATPase burns up calones
by regulating the body's
sodium and potassium
levels, Newsweek said, and a
reduction in the enzyme’s
activity may mean the body
is storing food calones tn-
stead of burning them, said
Dr. Jeffrey S. Fler. chief of
the diabetes unit at Boston's
Beth Israel Hospital, who led
the team.

Another research team,
headed by Dr. Theordore
Van Italie of New York's
Columbia University. said
the body stores a substance
called “brown fat" around
the kidneys, adrenal glands
and aorta which apparently
dissipates calories as heat in
leaner people.

Van Itallie found that
brown fat shrinks with age,
apparently making people
gain weight as they get
older.

Van Itallie also found that
being too far under the so-
called “ideal” weight for
height cited by doctors can
be as unhealthy as being
over that weight, the
magazine said.

The study said a woman

who is 30 per cent
underweight, for instance,
faces the same _ health

hazards as one who is 55 per
cent overweight.
