Their thinking ts that if they live in a building that is fall of other peaple then they are less fikely to be burglar- ized. This is not the case, as most break-ins have occurred as a resalt of the carelessness ofa few. A recent B&E resulted in the theft ofa laptop comput- er from a strata unit that was Jocked at the time. Somebody obviously entered with a key and it's possible chat the lock was still keyed to a construction master from tive years ago. Ifyou bay a home, new or used, change the locks. You don’t knaw who had che keys before you moved in. The biggest complaint I've heard about getting the locks re-keyed is the high cost of having the locksmith come in to do the job. Ifyou think about the potential savings in a single break in prevented, that alone should motivate you. As an alternative to paving tor a service call you should remove the locks yourself’ and bring them to a locksmith 3 & sound shop. ‘The charges will be less, just make sure you have somebody at home when vou do this. EP know you're think- ing “OF course,” but bam aware of people that have left their house with no locks and driven into town, Now that vour locks have been re-keyed vou should look at other security mea- sures fer your unit which could include getting nd of old door chains that come down in one swift kick. There are much stronger versions availabie at the hardware store. Window locks can be added by putting a piece of wood in the track. That will keep it from being jimmied bute it could still be smashed. Security window film is a good form of protection as it will increase the time required by a thief to get in. An alarm system is a good deterrent as well. Don't count on other people to look after you ina building. Always do what ever Vou can to protect your: self. A building could have the best doors and locks in the workd but if semeone is already inside, the first fine of defense is gone. If vou sce suspicious activ: ity, call the police and let vour neighbours Know as well. Consider starting or joining a Block Watch, it really does make a difference.
