From page t rears ago he had his chance bilitation project is one of many the DFO is overseeing this summer throughout the province. North Vancouver District contributed $20,000 towards the project, which will feature a controlled intake pipeline beginning at the William Griffin skateboard park that will divert water to a natural side channel and pond area currently under construction. According to Jonsson, the pond. area is critical to the project: “That’s where your high survival rates come in, especially in the wintertime.” The two main problems for the creek’s fish popula- . tions are a lack of spawning -grounds and safe shelter from winter floods. “This project will address both those concerns,” said North Shore Streamkeepers’ Karen Munro. _ The plan is that fish will ‘swim up Mosquito Creek to the top of the skateboard bowl, where the creck then travels under a 400m culvert. The fish will have no where che to no. “Then they'll have ra tura around and come back to try another route” Jonsson said. The hope ts that the new side channel will provide another route for the spawn- ing fish, which will work their wav up the 40 nictres of new creck toa gravel pond. “As soon as we open this up and turn on the water there will be fish that find their way in’ here” said Jonsson, pointing toward a flat arca being cleared by a front-end loader. “And when those fish return in three years, they'll start seeding the system so there will be a resident popu- lation in this area that will just use (Mosquito Creek) as a highway.” Jonsson said this style of stream rehabilitation has come into its own in the last 1G years, and. many of the concepts being employed are new. North Vancouver District's chief naturalist Kevin Bell said the municipality ‘is fully behind the rehab project. “North Shore Stream- keepers approached us with the propasal and once we checked everything with our parks people, and the DFO approved it, we started the project.” Bell said. If all gees well with this summer's Mesquite Creek rehab, Bell said similar pro- jects could be undertaken on Hastings, MeKay, Maplewood and MeCartney creeks. “We have a situation in the district where we have alot of back channels that are backed up” fron: flood control mea- sures taken years ago, said Bell. Bell said the district will provide signage and perhaps an observation area bv the new side channel. Anumber of tree snags will also be left near the pond so that nest boxes can be installed attract wood ducks. Fishermen should rake note that no fishing 1s allowed on Mosquito Creek (The only North Shore rivers open for fishing are the Capilano and Seymour Rivers and Lynn Creek). : _fonsson said the Mosquito Creck project should be com- pleted by Labor Day. : to JEEP DOWNERS: READ THIS!
