From page \ During the separation, Diana Caouette was involved in a new relationship with a man. It developed to the point where the children were spending time with the man, according to court tes- timony. On May 6 Caouette was arrested at his estranged wife’s home. He was charged with threatening _her. Caouette was released on bail with conditions set out by a justice of the peace. One condition was that he was not to be found east of Riverside Drive where Diana Caouerte and the children lived. For about five wecks, according to the Crown, Michel Caouette was not allowed to see the children. On Father’s Day, Joshua had an overnight visit at his dad’s home. Both children eventually had abcut two or three overnight visits at their father’s home during the month leading up .to the attack. The children’s access con- ditions accepted by both sides in mid June included no overnight visits at the father’s home. According ta evidence from Belinda Geraghty, a family court counselor, she met with Michel Caouette on June 12 to discuss Diana Caouette’s new relationship with a man. “He made a comment to the effect that it more or less confirmed what he had sus- pected all along,” said Geraghty. She added that Michel Caouctte did not appear to have any emotional reaction. 13 Ci THAN NAILS JOSHUA Caouette, rushed to Lions Gate Hospital on the morning of July 13, 1995. The Crown planned to present videotape evidence showing Michel Caouette buying a small axe at the North Vancouver Lumberland store six days prior to the attack upon the children. The wood-handled axe was designed to be “wielded with one hand,” according to the Crown. On the same day, the Crown said, Caouette bought three long hooks with threads on them designed to be screwed into wood. Three days before the attack, Caouette sold his “major” personal assets con- sisting of a television and VCR. The purchaser, Ali-Reza Hassam, paid $440 for the items. Hassam owns Shadow Electronic Video in the 1800-block of Lonsdale Avenue. Hassam testified that Caouette was a store cus- FACTORY FUTON tomer and that Hassam had not noticed anything unusual about Caouette’s demeanor on July 10, 1995. Michel Caouette, who sat facing forward and rarely moved throughout Monday’s court proceedings, nodded when Hassam explained that Caouette agreed to the $440 offer without bartering, Balding and with a full dark —_ beard, Caouette appeared to have gained weight since the preliminary hearing beld a year ago in North Vancouver. Caouette was dressed in a grey business suit and tie. The Crown said it would present evidence in the trial to show Michel Caouette sold the rest of his personal items to a second-hand store in North Vancouver on July 12.
