Around-town performance From page 22 10% improvement in fuel consumption averaging 11.31/100 kms (26 m-p.g.} in combined city and high- way driving. This improve- ment is enough to avoid expensive gas puzzler taxes in some Canadian provinces (not B.C.) and the States, thereby adding to the overail value of the car, The Q45’s restyled interi- or is extremely well-finished and ‘warmer’ than the previ- ous model. There’s more wood trim, attractive round instruments, large console buttons for the stereo and heater with easy-to-read white-on-black lettering, and a unique center console bin that opens from either side. On the highway, the Q45 is an extremely quict and vibration-free car with a ride se smooth that it feels like it’s flying a few centimetre: above the road surface. Transmission shifts are effort- less, and the engine is barely audible. Engine speed is just 2,100 r.p.m. in top gear at a steady 100 km-h (62 mi.p.h.). Ernphasis has been placed on ride rather than handling and there is some body lean in the corners; even though ed it has a fully independent suspension and the Touring, model has stiffer springs. Many luxury features are standard 2quipment on the Q45, including traction con- trol (important on a rear- wheel-drive car), four-wheel dise brakes with ABS, vehi- cle-speed sensitive power- assisted rack and pinion steering, 16-inch alloy wheels, performance V-rated radials, and foglights. Inside, there's leather - upholstery, 10-way power front heated seats with two- position memory on the dri- ver’s side, a 260 watt Bose audio system with six-dise CD changer, power tilt/tele- scopic steering wheel, Homelink garage door/entry gare automatic opener, and automatic climate control . with filters in the ventilation system. The Touring model adds sport-tuned shocks, five- spoke alloy wheels, rear spoil- er, black grille, different stecring wheel, and Q45t badging. Though it’s a fairly big car, the trunk is comparative- ly small (10.7 cu. ft.) and there’s no ski sack or fold- down rear seat. The new Q45 is expected to go on sale next month. x. . 9 nm Bimmer’s booming BMW Canada Inc. reported the best first six months in its his- tory with record June sales of 748 units driving the first half of the year total to 2,886. : .
