The employers say the offer takes nothing away from current employees. Safeway and Save-On-Foods say their offer simply extends the terms and con- ditions of the current agreement for two years, A lower starting rate offered to new employees is consistent with other UFCW supermarket contracts through- out the province, said the supermarket chains, UFCW Locul 2000 president Leif Hansen said the provincial union mem- bership has not bought the employers’ campaign saying claiming the offer does not affect current employees. “Part of the employers’ proposal states clearly that employees who are now laid off, or who want to increase their part-time hours can only do so by taking a-wage cut of almost 50%,” said Hansen.
