August starts improve

rose most strongly in the
Toronto area where labour
disruptions slowed activity
the previous month,

Seasonally adjusted urban
starts in Quebec inched up
1.5% in August relative to
July despite lower single
starts. All of the Quebec
gains in multiple unit con-
struction were recorded , in
the Montreal area,

Prairie starts rose margin-
ally in August relative to
July, on a seasonally adjusted
basis. New construction, was
down in Manitoba, but up in
Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The latter province is unique
in Canada as starts this year
are ahead of fast year's pace,
