NEUTERING TO CONTROL AGGRESSION

AND SPRAYING CATS

Q: My dog is aggressive to people,
will neutering make him a better dog?

Dr. G: When a male dog is neutered,
both testicles are surgically removed.
This removes the source of the male
hormone testosterone. Neutering
does help curb aggression towards
other male dogs because territorial
protection diminishes.

Removing the testicles can help
reduce aggression problems with
people but it will not solve the prob-

behaviour. Females will also spray,
though less commonly.

The most common reason for spray-
ing is bladder irritation caused by
either infection or crystals. Diets high
in magnesium that promote an alka-
line urine can cause the formation of
crystals in the bladder, a disease
called feline urologic syndrome (FUS)

make it to the litterbox or wait to be let

Spraying can also be a behavioural
problem. Because cats are finicky,
dirty Jitter boxes or pans ‘in busy
places will be avoided. Cats may also

their area. This is seen when a new
cat arrives, another person moves in,
or even if a hamster is bought. ‘

To find the reason for spraying, a
urine sample is first. checked ‘for
infection or. crystals. . Any problem
detected can be treated. If the
spraying is behavioural, medications
can be used or other ways found to
modify the behaviour. '
