Friday, April 8, 1994 - North Shore News - 17 Conservation could be money saver From page 15 school rather than at the parking lot bins. Other interested schools should register with the North Shore Recycling Program (984- 9730) . eee A Vancouver society, the Sage Foundation, is immersed in a new- tion if their district doesn't get involved in the above-mentioned Destination Conservation, The Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks offers the EcoEducation program, which includes garbage reduction and composting workshops, hazardous waste information, and a binder full of teacher resources and an award- winning Eco the Ecosaurus video, Already aver 100,000 students have pledged to become members of the Green Team, a province- wide youth movement of garbage reduction advocates, and the EeoEd program will visit over 150 schools in the 1993/94 academic year us part of ts effort to reach every ele- mentary student in the province. For more information call Helene Kraushaar at 683-0127, Some schools, such as Cove Cliff in Deep Cove, are also part of the Green School program adminis- tered by the Alberta-based SEEDS Foundation, For information on becoming a Green School and taking part ina variety of conservation inilialives aimed at students, write the SEEDS Foundation, 440 - $0169 104th SL, Edmonton Alta., DSS 1A5, to-B.C. project that promises signif- icant benefits to provincial schoo! districts. Under the program, school dis- tricts register in Destination Conservation, with, hopefully, the majority of the schools within that district participating. A technical consultant with the Sage Foundation performs a walk- through audit of the schools and prepares a report suggesting low- cost ways energy and resource use could be decreased. Conservation clubs within the schools —- consisting of a lead teacher and students — also do audits of water and energy use, and solid waste production. Over the three-year program, the schools are monitored and support- ed by the Sage Foundation. Of the savings that are reaped by imple- menting the program, 10% goes back to Sage. Sage suggests that of the remaining 90%, 60% go to the school district for further energy- saving retrofits in the schools, 25% go to the schools themselves, and - 5% to the custedian or maintenance staff responsible for implementing the structural changes.
