+ tolerant Newcomers should learn ropes Dear Editor: A Jot of folks don't understand why some of us happen to feel in- towards some of our newer Canadians. The younger generation especially, who have grown up with the proverbial silver spoon in their mouths, can't get the pic- ture, and don't have a clue where people like old Doug or myself, in our 60s, get some of our ideas. . For. thelr benefit, I'd like to briefly address that ‘subject. Let's begin at the beginning, about 40 yeurs ago. Back then, and for most of my working life, even people born in this country, like myself, uniess they happened to be rich, couldn't aspire fo one day enjoying the good life in a major city in this country just automatically. it wasn't as easy as hopping on a plane, or jumping into the car, and simply going there. A great number of us have had to spend half a lifetime, working in remote locations in some of ihe most undesirable parts of this country, to earn enough experi- ence at our jobs, and acquire enough ‘‘whiskers’’ or seniority to qualify for a job in “the big ci- ty."” And now that we're finally here, we don't enjoy discovering that it has been turned into a car- bon copy of some Third World ghetio, where we ourselves are made to feel like the intruders by those from elsewhere who out- number us. That aaturally makes us resent. ful and downright angry. Because it tells us we've wasted half a lifetime in some god-for- saken part of the backwoods for nothing! In our shoes, these high-minded Keep Collins in print Dear Editor: lam writing in response to the letters which have appeared recently in the North Shore News. ! am referring to those letters such as the Letter of the Day on April. 16, which appear to be in support of a renewed “Kill Doug Collins” movement. ; It. seems to me that the people who criticize Doug Collins do not realize that they are engaging in the very action he has encouraged for years, To :me, Doug's colurnns en- “courage. citizens to get involved, think about the issucs and, speak out, ; Please notice that Collins does * not -tell his rivals to stop writing; he encourages their opinions, Conversely; Doug's detractors insist that the Morth Shore News silence him, as if to say that their words are’ the only ‘ones which should be heard. This seems like a double stand- ard to me, Further, these people criticize the North Shore News and imply that the paper {s irresponsible to the community in allowing Collins to express his views, Judging by the number of readers’ letters published, | would conclude that the News' editorials are , accomplishing exactly what they are supposed to: community involvement! ¢ Editorials are essentially mad: sup of writers’ opinions, and the News certainly prints cditorials with different viewpoints, These different viewpoints are the source of dialogue which mus: be presented if the community is to fully understand the issues, It is time for readers to start analysing editorials using reason rather than reacting through pure emotion. This newspaper would be doing the community a great disservice if it were to let Doug Collins go. Greg Patrick North Vancouver Ottawa wasting our tax dollars Dear Editor: .
