Brock Turner isigns on with NV swim club THE CHENA Swim Club * North Vancouver has a Mfirm belief that the club can once again be recognized as ne of the premier swim- ming teams in the province. McCredie ports Reporter To help turn this belief into a reality, the club has hired a new coach. “What we are hoping to do is bring our membership up and regain the respect the club once held in the swimming scene,” said Chena’s freshman coach Brock urner. “This club used to be one of he biggest in B.C.. and after our mefforts at rebuilding, in will be peain.”” Turner says that with the en- Rhusiastic and dedicated profes- ional coaching staff he’ has adopted, the task of rebuilding is fust a matter of getting the word put that Chena is back. Sharing the coaching duties with urner are stand-out coaches udy Aspinall and daughter Kim, Baeend brother and sister duo Ardell id Aryk Brown. During its heyday, the Chena wim Club had upwards of 150 Bnembers, many of whom were ompetitive at the provincial and ational levels. The club's current membership s about 60 young athletes. In 1980, the Mount Seymour Swim Club and the Lions Gate swim Club amalgamated to form e Chena Swim Club, North ancouver’s sole swimming club. But Turner was quick to point out that while the club intends to train swimmers for provincial and national ievel meets, any child who wants to swim will be given the ful efforts of the coaches, regardless of the child’s potential. “We want {0 creale an at- mosphere where every kid in the club will enjoy the experience,” added Turner. There are currently two swim- mers in the elite category, whom Turner personally coaches, but he is hoping that some of the younger swimmers will soon be ready to compete at the elite level.
