$2 - Sunday, July 5, 1992 ~ North Shore News BUSINESS BRIEFS AWARD WINNER THE NORTH Shore Economic Development Commission (EDC) has been named one of the top development commissions in North America. The EDC received two Best of Class awards at the recent con- ference of the American Economic ‘Development Council (AEDC) for its technology companies directory and its waterfront industry report. The EDC also received two Su- perior designations for its Dun- darave Business Area Review and for its review of the federal con- stitution proposals and their effect on local economic development. Bonnie Pyplacz, EDC economic development officer, said most of the U.S. economic development commissions have better and ‘stronger resources than their Ca- nadian counterparts. “t's really hard to compete with the American markets because. they have advertising firms and consultants on retainer which is something we don’t have,’’ said Pyplacz. “It’s (awards) a big deal for us here.” The EDC also received an-hon- orable mention for its ‘‘Creating a Great Environment to Do Business’. project. North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP MLA David Schreck said the EDC is helping to promote business across the North Shore. “Businesses on the North Shore are getting the information and tools they need to build a strong, diversified economy. The EDC is playing a vital role in the North Shore’s emphasis on business and community planning,’’ said Schreck. Said Economic Diversification Minister Dave Zimbelt: ‘‘I am pleased -to see that the 2,300- member American Economic De- velopment Council has recognized the EDC as one of the best onthe = § continent. “The government is committed to .helping British Columbians strengthen locally based businesses and the commission’s ac- complishmenits show what can be achieved.”” - WHISTLER CONFERENCE CREATING A heroic environ- ment in the workplace, joining in the high-tech revolution and recognizing creativity as a crucial and necessary business skill wil! be among the topics explored at Whistler on the weekend of July 17 during ‘‘Whistler While.
