NEWS photo THE NORTH Shore's world skating champion, Karen Magnussen, has always co-operated with locai requests to use her name on community projects and given up her time for various public func- tions. tn return, Magnussen and her family have never received a single free admission to piaces like the new wave pool or the North Vancouver recreation centre named after her. On top of this, the affable former world champion has been turned away twice by the local rec commission in her attempts to set up a skating program for youngsters. Magnussen startled by | F negative response to . hew program proposal From page 17 called Champions Way, and it was co-designed with her former coach, Linda Brockman. The program targets all skaters, including hockey players, speed skaters and figure skaters and is designed to channel the youngsters into their sport with better skating skills. “Some kids get stuck in a rec program for four years.... They are over the hill by the time you find out some of them have tal- ent,’ said Magnussen, who has three children. Magnussen said she has the ex- pertise to pinpoint kids with talent at a young age. Young said he supected that Magnussen was an _ exceilent teacher, but he said he did not want to discuss Magnussen’s pro- gram in detail because it would involve dealing with negotiations. He did say, however, that private-sector programs for profit had a low priority for receiving recCentre ice time. Young said rec commission programs had first priority and community-based non-profit pro- grams were second. “The rates ‘are different for any project with a profit motive, because it is not proper for the public to subsidize,’’ said Young. “The development of figure skaters in North Vancouver is not the business of the recreation commission, it’s the business of organizations such as the North Vancouver Skating Club to iden- tify world champions within that club,”’ he said. Young said he plans to speak to Magnussen about her proposal. Magnussen said her program may cost a little more, but it would be highly cost-effective and would give skaters a better return for their money than average rec centre programs. Meanwhile, the former skating world champer continues to own and run Maggie’s Muffins in West Vancouver with her husband, Tony Cella. She also coaches skating at the North Shore Winter Club. “Coming back to Canada, I thought I could get a lot of things going and a lot of programs started, but it’s harder trying to get things going here than when 1 lived in Boston. 1 wouldn't have believed it if you told me this be- fore we moved back,’’ said Magnussen.
