Harmony Arts festival
seeks craft submissions

Arts Alley is a juried craft
market held outdoors during the
week-long August event at
Ambleside Landing.

Residents surveyed on project
GVRD finds support for Cleveland hydro plan

PUBLIC surveys on the construction of a hydropower
generator at North Vancouver's Cleveland Dam show a
majority of people support the project.

According to a May 7 Greater
Vancouver Regional District
({GVRD) report, written and ver-
tal surveys on the issue ranged
from 40% to 90% in support, 4%
to 10% against, and 4% to S0%
undecided or with no opinion on
the project.

The Capilano Hydropower Pro-
ject would tap excess Cleveland
Dam water to generate power for
B.C. Hydro.

The project involves construc-
ticn of an underground chamber
to house a power station on the
west side of Cleveland Dam.

A fenced transformer yard and
either an above-ground or under-
ground transmission line connec-
ting the existing Glenmore
transmission line and substation
would also be built.

The GVRD estimates that the
hydropower project will take 12 to
17 months to build at a cost of
between $10 million and $15 mil-
lion.

The estimated net annual reve-
nue from the project is $! million
to $1.7 million, which the GVRD
says will be used to offset water
costs.

responded to the written and

tial earthquake upgrading of
Cleveland Dam took the water
source out of commission earlier
this year.

The Seymour and Coquitlam
reservoirs had been supplying the
entire GVRD system with water
while the Capilano reservoir was
shut down.

on the 38-year-old dam: the se-
cond phase, upgrading the dam’s
foundation, is scheduled to start
in June.

The third and final upgrade
phase will continue into the fall.
The upgrading project will cost an
estiniated $3.5 million.

According to aw GVRD
spokesman, the goal of refilling
the Capilano reservoir by June is
on schedule.

The reservoir’s water level was
dropped 70 feet for initial dam
upgrading work; 55 feet of that 70
feet has recently been recovered.
