Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW Joe Jackson — Laughter And Lust, Virgin Records 1991 The pop chameleon leaves technicolor tracks. Jackson shows us why he’s re- mained relevant and commercially viable since he hitched a ride on the British New Wave with the 1979 release of Look Sharp. Jackson follows his instinct as a music writer first. Chart-mongering is secondary (check Jackson’s take on the biz on Hit Single). The result over the years has been an eclectic body of work. He takes risks — 1981's Jumpin’ Jive, Body and Soul in 1984, the Tucker soundtrack in 1988 to name a few. New ways to play are found in the creative stretch. So Laughter and Lust makes the head spin with its stylistic shifts and jolts and wicked barbs. In less clever hands this grab bag would have burst under the weight of self-conscious gim- crackery. Oddly enough, the true test of the quality of the prizes contained within is proved on a cover tune. Jackson's azgressive cover version of a Fleetwood Mac chestnut, Oh Well, No shame, nothing lame. Aurlus Mabele With Loketo — King Of Soukous, Sound Wave Records 1991 Filling the guitar void left by departed fret speedster Diblo Dibala, Loketo leader Mabele makes more use of the harmoni- ous female voices backing his singing. 4 looking sharp with Laughier and Lust photo submitted JOE JACKSON retains his relevance on Laughter And Lust by following his music-writing instincts. The progression over the past three releases shows an increas- ingly production-minded studio sheen to the band's intoxicating brand of soukous music. The changes come across as an evolutionary notch forward rather than a make-do adjustment fol- low. ng the loss of a fine guitarist. Creating extremely lively music on a purely physical level, Loketo dances on to spiritual ground with the particularly effective Un Seul Dieu (One God) — a prayertul soukous confection, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, Ra- dioactive Records 1991 Edinisurgh, Scotland brings to North American ears a band that conveys both raw guitar urgency and an intuitive feel tor resounding pop hooks. Add ta that the potent lyrical contributions of a songwriting team — (drummer) Derek Kelly and (singer-guitarist) Martin Metcalfe — that knows haw to make the most of few words and startling strings of met- aphor. One of the prime cuts, Blacker Than Black. blasts open this 14- song debut. Busting out all spaghetti western bravura and twang, Metcalfe’s nasal voice-of- doom proclaims memorable words: “Death is a pony that’s waiting for me. His name is Luigi. He's tied to the black tree.” Bracing, slightly sinister stuff for now pop people who fancy a bit of edge. First Night seeking submissions New once FIRST NIGHT.
