6 - Friday, Juty 28, 1989 - North Shore News INSIGHTS Monument gives ‘Russ’ a place in WV history THEY REMEMBERED RUSSELL RICHARDS last week and made sure his name will live on with the present and future generations of West Vancouverites. In a simple ceremony Ald. Alex Brokenshire, retired municipal clerk Rupert Harrison and Rotary president Gary Muchala unveiled a plaque on a rock in Dundarave Park honoring the former reeve who died last year at age 93. A Jawyer-businessman and . president. of the family-owned Pitman’s Business College in Van- couver, ‘‘Russ’’ (as he was widely known) gave generously of his time and taletiis to the community — as president of the West Yan Board of Trade, as a municipal councillor and in 1957-58 as reeve. His term of office saw completion of the original Rec Centre building, the acqpisition of the Gleneagles golf course and West Van's entry into the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District. He also played a major role in launching West Van Rotary Club of which he became president. They put that on his plaque, too. It was perhaps the proudest PER- SONAL achieverent of a man Bridge gap ORTH SHORE councils have raised some valid concerns over the Greater Vancouver Transpor- tation Task Force report. Perhaps the most important of which is the report’s failure to address the Lions Gate Bridge issue, par- ticularly in light of increasing pressure being brought to bear both on the bridge and West Vanccuver’s road network by heavier vehicular traffic volumes moving to and from Vaxcouver Island via Horseshoe Bay and to and from the rapidly developing Whistler area along the Sea to Sky Highway. Planned completion of the project to pave the Duf- fey Lake Road from Mount Cvrrie to Lillooet will surely increase the through-trafiic pressure on West Vancouver even more. While the task force report has recognized the need for an expanded Second Narrews Bridge and its sur- rounding transportation network to absorb mushroc.ming population growth ir. North Vancouver Distric?’s Seymour area and to complement the Cassiar Connector project, the same foresight has not been focused on the First Narrows. A recent engineering report on the health of Lions Gate Bridge kas stated that the bridge is structurally sound, but its present road decking is too narrow and inadequate for the 68,000. vehicles that now cross it each day. That inedequacy will surely only become more ap- parent with increasing use. No report on transportation in the Greater VYan- couver region can be considered complete without some long-term solution to the Lions Gate Bridge bot- tieneck. who has a visible monument to his well-carned place in West Van his- tory. wae STAGELIGHTS: You can safely take your church-going maiden aunt to The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and she'll probably love every minute of it.
