Automobile Association sug- gests you prepare now for the cold weather that’s bound to arrive. BCAA’s supervisor of vehicle inspections, Dave Chapman, advises you to give your car the chance it deserves, with a complete pre-winter service and tune-up. . “Have your mechanic tune the engine, check and service the brakes, cooling system, battery, tires and exhaust system and give it an oil change and iubrica- tion. Ensuze that the lights and windshield wipers are working properly,’’ Chapman says. Once your car is ready for the road, there are a few items you should pack in case a fierce winter storm should strike without warning. (Even when warnings have been issued, and the storm is'creating havoc, many motorists stiff insist on driving.) BCAA recommends you carry these essential items in your car throughout the winter: ¢ shovel and sand © first aid kit © wool blanket © booster cables © tire chains © coins and emergency phone numbers « warning light or road flares © ice scraper and brush © (working) flashlight © extra fuses © road maps If you are travelling long distances on the highway you should also include: © matches and a slow burning candle e warm clothing and footwear ® non-perishable food An emergency kit such as this one will keep you safe, warm and dry until the storm passes or help ar- rives. Winter's arrival might take you by surprise, but it won’t be a problem if both you and your car are prepared. c ae) . ¥ - .
