PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT Native culture ce WITNESS THE strength and pride ef North America’s native people in Plains Indians, a photographic exhibition which opened Or:ober 19 at The Vancouver Museum. in a series of striking black and white portraits, Canadian photographer Christine Turnauer has captured the essence of a culture that has survived the dramatic changes of the 19th and 20th centuries. The maximum Guaranteed In- come Supplement increased to $238.56 (from $235.03) for each married person whose spouse also receives an Old Age Security pen- sion and for a married person whose spouse receives a Spouse's Allowance. The maximum Spouse’s Allowance’ (SPA) — paid to low- income people between 60 and 64 who are married to GIS recipients increased to $546.75 (from $538.67). The maximum Widowed Spouse's. Allowance (WSA), paid only to low-income widowed per- sons aged 60 to 64 who reside in Canada and mect the basic resi- dence requirements, increased to $603.63 (from $594.71), - + Both the Guaranteed . Income ‘Supplement and Spouse’s Allowance are payable only to res- idents of Canada. A resident who leaves Canada will receive the GIS or Spouse’s Allowance for the month of depar- ture and for six months only. They were exhibited at the Whyte Museum in Banff in 1986, and will also be shown this year at the British Museum. The portraits are augmented by artifacts from the Vancouver Museum’s ethnology collection, and quotations describing the In- dians’ spiritual connections with the natural world. Turnauer was born in Austria in 1946, and immigrated to Alberta in 1979, where she began doing por- trait photography. Much of her lebrated training comes from the several years she spent living in Paris, working as an assistant to fashion photographers. People of the Buffalo, a special presentation of native dance and music by Ray McKeown, will be held in conjunction with the Plains Indians exhibition, Sunday, November 15 and 22 at 2 p.m. Vancouver Museum hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and holidays.
