We would like to clarify this for the benefit of North Shore residents. A contract was signed in 1980 between the Vancouver Richmond Association and ail Lower Mainland mentally handicapped associations. Under this we all share 50 per cent of the proceeds of the sale of items collected from the residents of Greater Van- couver. Value Village is responsible for all operating expenses, including vehicle purchase, maintenance and insurance, the rental and upkeep of five stores, and the wages of over 200 staff. In 1986 the NSAMH received $36,000. The total received by all Lower Mainland mentally handicapped associations in the same period was in excess of $650,000. Under a similar funding ar- rangement the Canadian Diabetes Association operates a store on Victoria Drive in cooperation with Value Village, and the Lions Society has a like arrangement with Scotties Thrift Village stores. Because the mentally handi- capped associations ‘have the greatest number of stores to supply and replenish, North Shore homes are phoned approximately every three to four weeks, whereas the Lions Society and the Diabetes Association phone every seven to eight weeks. The North Shore is considered a priority area for all the groups who raise funds through the collection and sale of used items, Those of us who live here should feel fortunate that we are so important to the maintenance of vital services pro- vided by these very necessary Van- couver charities. There are some who criticize the percentage return to the associa- tions, but there are few business people who would reject an ar- rangement whereby they provide no assistance, leave all the com- plexities to someone else — and still receive nearly 4 of a million dollars in profit.
