NEW DOCUMENTS Contracts benefit | builder, consumer} THE BUILDING industry now acknowledges six new builder contracts. Developed and distributed by the Canadian Home Builders Association of British Columbia (CHBA- BC), the separate documents include a Construction Agreement, Sales Agree- ment, Offer to Purchase, Builder Sub-Contractor Agreement, Construction Specifications, and Change Work Order. Introduced in November after more than a year of development, the contracts are meant to cover every aspect of home con- struction. “The contracts assist the builder as well as the con- sumer,’’ said Bob Kuhn, corporate council for Domi- nion Construction and one of the people involved in preparing the contracts. “Drafting and development represented a long process. We reviewed every angle — legal and practical.’’ It is the first time that standard, comprehensive contracts have been available within the industry. Prior to their introduction, most buiiders agree that they had a tendency to negotiate terms on the back of ciga- rette packages or restaurant napkins.
