The North Shore German Shep- herd Schutzhund Club is seeking members. Schutzhund is a type of dog training and competition that orig- inated in Europe. It outlines a formalized structure for evaluating dogs in tracking, obedience and protection skills, and is a popular sport throughout much of the world. The training is open to al! breeds of working dogs plus mixed breeds. As a handler, the owner gains a better understanding of his pet's behavior. Together, owner and dog learn and progress as a team WV PROGRAMS into each phase and level of train- ing. The three phases of Schutzhund are tracking, obedience and pro- tection. Using proven training methods, handlers learn to train their dogs in each area. As a club, the members discuss the progress of their dogs and share ideas on how to solve indi- vidual training problems. Tracking tests the dog’s level of concentration, determination and scenting capacity. The dog must follow a human track, point out objects purposely left on the track, find turns on the track and follow the scent regardless of the weather and ground conditions. Obedience tests the dog's will- ingness to obey its master.
