North Shore are converted into horti-

cultural preducts and put back on the
land, it completes the environmental
loop, a principle that we have to put
into practice.

If you already have an adequate
supply of mineral soil in your beds
but the level has dropped over the
years it might make more sense to
just add an organic amendment to the
soil and raise the bed’s level. .

The best and cheapest material is
honie compost but there never seems

to be enough for all the garden beds

or planted areas.

Untii recently, it was not possible
to buy commercial compost but now
it is available as pan of the North
Shore Recycling Program. As with
composted topsoil, the compost is
coarse in texture but does last longer
than manure as a source of nutrients
and soi] conditioner.

Mushroom manure (actually
spent mushroom compost) has been
popular for years but the age and
quality is unpredictable. Fresh mush-
room manure can be quite alkaline
and high in salts.

Animal manures are good soil
conditioners but do have the potential
to be contaminated with undigested
weed seeds. Horse manure is particu-
larly prone to this problem.

What ever you use, remember
that soil must have large colonies of
beneficial microbes to break down
the complex fertilizer molecules and
make, them available to plants.
Keeping sufficient organic material
in the soil will help to ensure a
healthy microbial population.

These microbes can also be your
first line of defence against some of
‘the plant pathogens and fungi.
