THE VOICE OF NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER “north shore: ; SUNDAY WEDNESDAY . FRIDAY 1139 Lonsdale Ave. North Vancouver, B.C. V7M 2H4 56,893 (average. Wednesday 2 Friday & Sunday) - The dangers posed to pedestrians and motorists alike by local youngsters on skateboards, are becoming too great. to bear. Irresponsible youths dash recklessly . through congested North Shore streets and walkways, . endangering themselves and others with their frivolous . Tolling toys. - A. _ sub-culture has arisen within the ranks of misguided. youth that encourages a death-wish men- : tality for a couple of thrills. How many times must the public bear. witness to ‘ youth whizzing past startled pedestrians? When will we - see the first fatality of a child being killed because he ‘ was skateboarding in traffic? North Vancouver City Council is taking action and dealing with the rolling menace. The council is in the . process of drafting an amended bylaw that would , outlaw skateboards from city sidewalks. Enforcement of the'law should be easy. No one can - miss the gangs of youths milling about the streets with _ their death toys and loud clothing. : Unfortunately, the proposed bylaw is incomplete. - The council must make sure that skateboarders do not : play on the streets. The only safe place for skateboard . games is in the backyard. * Hopefully, the drafted bylaw will address this pro- _ blem and. the other North Shore municipalities will follow the council’s initiative. If not, the summer of 1986 may be remembered for the demise of common courtesy, and blood on the streets.
