Thieves busy at Christmas CHRISTMAS | shoppers have been the victims of theft, local police of- ficials have reported. Both North and West Vancouver Police are ad- vising shoppers not to leave valuables in unat- tended vehicles, especially in underground parking lots. Tuesday a thief smash- ed the window of a West Vancouver resident’s car parkedin an underground lot on Clyde Avenue and stole a pair of binoculars worth $100. Police advise if drivers must leave parcels in vehicles to lock them in the trunk. For those without trunks, covering goods with a blanket can deter crime. Assault nets jail term A 26-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced to 18 months in jail Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of assault causing bodily harm. In addition to the jail term, North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.D. Layton placed Stephen Arthur Whitfield on a year’s probation and recommended Whitfield serve his sentence in a correctional forestry camp. The North Vancouver man originally faced charges of unlawful con- finement and assault with weapons, specifically sticks and pins, in addi- tion to the assault charge, in connection with an Aug. 14 incident in which another male was confin- ed against his will and physically assaulted. Charges laid in boat scam A DELTA man has been charged with public mischief in connection with a false theft report. On June 18, Charles John Sterling, 40, reported the theft of his boat and trailer worth $15,000 from the Sunset Marina in West Van- couver. A subsequent in- vestigation by the West Vancouver Police reveal- ed that the theft report was false, said West Van- couver Cst. David Bingham. ; The boat was found in Nanaimo, where RCMP are investigating allega- tions of fraud against Sterling. Sterling is scheduled to appear in West Van- couver provincial court Jan. 6. Two arrested in cigarette theft TWO Vancouver residents were brought before North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.D. Layton on Wednes- day facing charges con- nected with heavy smok- ing habits. Mark Mathew Geddes, 29, and Sandra Barbara Wagner, 23, were jointly charged with theft over $200 following the disap- ‘pearance of approximate- ly 60 cartons of cigarettes from Overwaitea Foods. The haul would have a retail value of close to $1,200. The two were put over to Dec. 30 to fix a date for trial, Cyclists hit in fog A CYCLIST and his pas- senger were struck down by a car in heavy fog Thursday evening. The 18-year-old North Vancouver man who was doubling an 18-year-old woman also of North Vancouver had no lights on his bicycle when he was hit by a 1983 Ford at the corner of Fell Avenue and Tobruck Street at approximately 5 p.m. , Both riders were taken to Lions Gate Hospital with minor injuries. The car, driven by a 46-year-old North Van- couver man, sustained minor damage.
