! 8 - Friday, March 8, 1985 - North Shore News T he censorship test ecently, 1 suggested that you write to your R MP about two things: the banning of political books by bureaucrats, and the at- tack on freedom of speech as exemplified in the Ernst Zuendel case. (Zuendel was charged with ‘spreading false news’ with regard to the Holocaust, and has now been convicted.) Eager to followe my own advice, I wrote to Mary Col- lins, the MP for Capilano, and Chuck Cook of North Vancouver-Burnaby. As far as getting any ac- tion was concerned, the ex- ercise was a waste of time. But it was instructive regar- ding the ways of MP’s who have no intention of rocking parliamentary boats or upsetting anyone who could advance their careers. . “Cook invited | me to have a: _ talk with -him. | And: his answer to. both questions. "was No.” fof provided | our gallant ‘tribunes. with copies of the relevant columns, and posed, ‘t these queries: | ‘twill you raise these. two l issues’ in the House, and ; campaign to remove an ar- bitrary authority from the jurisdiction of bureaucrats (with special reference to book-banning). and cam- paign also for the removal of Section 177 from the Crimi- nal: Code?’’ (Section 177 is the law under which Zuendel was charged.) - Cook invited me to have a talk with him. And_ his answer to both questions was No. When my letter was writ- ten, Mary Collins was swan- ning around Japan or some place with Joe Clark. Or she may have reached Indonesia, where she helped to waste some foreign aid money. But Derek Holton Section 2 _ bargepole. The prospect of. incurring the wrath of . the ‘victed on her return, she gave me a time-honored brush-off. The Zuendel matter, she said, was before the courts, so she couldn't comment on it. But it was good to hear from me. (The book-bann- ing thing she ignored entire- ly.} Her excuse was triple tripe. | wasn’t asking her to comment on the man’s guilt or innocence, but on the stupid law under which he was charged. And ! was ask- ing her to raise the issue in parliament, which is where the laws are made {in case that hasn’t occurred (o her yet). (For her information, too, she can raise any issue in parliament, | because MP’s have partiamentary immuni- ty.) : Perhaps 1 worry too much. But what she really means, I think, is that she won’t touch Zuendel and 177 with a Canadian Jewish Congress is not one that appeals to her. Nor, dogs she. want Brian Baloney frowning direction. Those ain't. the ways to fame and fortune. As already hinted, the talk with Cook showed that he’s not going to tilt at any windmills, efther. He would defend Section {77, it being so good. And he will not raise the censor- ship issue because he believes that the pornography thing is more important. Couldn't he raise both? No. He needs more facts, (So do we all, so do we all.) What about Zuende! and free speech? Well, Zuendel couldn’t be con- for knowingly spreading false news because he clearly believed what he was saying about the Holocaust. Well, shouldn't And even if he were, he could appeal. (Gee, I hadn't thought of that, Chuck.) Bu: in the censorship issue, Chuck is with me. Censorship of things politi- cal is bad, That’s what the man said. However, he won't take thai up either because there isn't much be- ing prohibited at the mo- ment. (How much is much, Chuck?) At this stage in our in- terlocution, he had a bright thought. He’s the party whip and, traditionally, party whips don’t raise controver- sial issues. There you have it. Even if it isn’t properly cooked. Meanwhile, Mary Collins said she'd be reviewing the issues I raised. Let’s not hotd our breath. ‘in. her | ad Free optional’ padded sidas OVER: GED.
