A STATISTICAL com- pendium produced by the Canadian Hospital Association shows that the B.C. health system compares very favourably with other provinces in the efficient utilization of funds and beds at its disposal. The CHA's 10-year survey (1971-1980) of provincial health care systems shows that B.C. hospitals have an average number of beds available with a higher-than- average length of patient Stay and high labour costs to contend with. In spite of this, the B.C. health care system produces health care at a less than average rate, compared with that of other provinces. The design of the B.C. health system, which em- phasizes streaming long-term care patients into less ex- pensive long-term care beds enables B.C. hospitals to utilize its acufe care beds and nursing care hours in a more efficient manner.
