B2 - Sumdey News, Fely 12, 1981 No one individual - is team. That is one of the keys to a player’s success with the Vancouver Whitecaps this season and it is one of the reasons why some teams have trouble finding the win columns even with the so- called “big name” stars. The system we use at the Whitecaps, and, in fact, the system both Johhny Giles‘ and I have grown up with, is the “no-star” style of hard work and constant pressure. It’s a system that not all players can fit into and it's one of the first things we looked for when we were A player who t. or won't, adapt to the way we play won't be wearing a Vancouver uniform. : And that Brings up ane of my off the ficld roles with the club. | As assistant coach it’s my job to work with the youngsters and to make sure that they are working to the same style and system as the firstteamlads. _ It’s essential to the ON THE ATTACK. the Nexth Van Richmond Munchkins Wedursday development of the club that these younger players are - completely — interchangeable the ball with Peter Lorimer a with anyone clse in our system. This pomt has proven itself with our recent spate of injuries. We've been able to bring in players off the bench who have been able to fit in completely with their teammates and do the job with a minimum adjustment. Of course the classic example of how well the system worked was the exhibition match with Naples when Johnny freely substituted the young players in the second half. Apart from a high skill level, the single most im- _ portant -attribute a player needs for the Whitecap system is the right attitude, or “character”. Hard work and desire are every bit as important as skill. No one will ever be able to accuse this team of not being fit or of not working hard in every outing. And if you look back on our schedule you'll see that it has been an extremely tough haul, and the injuries have been coming. But it's that toughness of character that will serve us well even when the lads are dead tired. That “character” has won Nordics move towards the goal of the at Empire Stadium.
