Al4-Wednesday, October 22, 1980 - North Shore News | North Van objects to excise tax It was an evening for eloquent statements con- cerning Canada, its con- stitution and its future Monday in the council chamber of North Van- couver City. And it boiled down to Mayor Jack Loucks breaking a tie vote in favour of council “absolutely rejec- ting” the proposed federal excise (ax on the province's natural gas and hydro- electrical power exports. The subject arose when council considered a petition being circulated by Tom Sidden, M.P. opposing the proposal. “For 109 years British Columbia has been treated as a colony of Eastern Canada,” said Alderman Stella Jo Dean, who moved support of Sidden’s petition. She went on to say that it was time for the province to determine its own destiny. “It’s Gime we in the West stood up and were counted,” said Alderman Bill Sorenson. And Alderman Gordon Cross who commented that it was “a very, very heavy subject,” supported the moton for another reason. “Since 1973 this (Liberal) government has been spending billions and billions and billions and _ billions more than they have taken in.... Now they are looking for fresh pastures to sow.” But the speeches were no less eloquent in oppostion to the mohion “Otlawa ts not a foreign country, the problems of Ottawa are the problems of British Columbia,” Alderman Gary Payne said “If we want to retire the deficits in Ottawa we have to Jook af ways of increasing the revenue going to Ot tawa [Us really a question of we here in our paradise on the west coast being walhng to share our bountiful wealth with other provinces | “We ate one Country one BPdke COU hation | Alderman Kroon said some of assets pust happen to be ina goographi hocation where we reside | Alderman Prank Marine was content lo say that the qucstion 1s cucreotly hypothetical at at this point people were just stirring up abitof hystena ~ borced to breceak a the veote Mayor Jack Loruchs comment wittre rast throne Uppprpe Witlom tio supportcd fa voring the proposed tar Car Rentals Oldies but Goodies free mileage - from $12.95 Monthly Rates 980-1615 | 1180 Marine Dr, we) fh \ | HALLOWEEN Candy Va Save .89 ! ‘Pom Pom’ Pops in 4 fruity flavours.
