— Al2 , Sunday News, January 1], 1981 CAP COLLEGE DOMINATION FEARED A straightforward move to transfer responsibility for Delbrook school over to the North Vancouver Recreation Commission erupted into heated debate at last week’s North Van- couver District council meeting. While aldermen had no objections to requesting the rec commission to take on the responsiblity for operating the former high school, some aldermen were concerned that Capilano College would dominate use of the school’s gymnasium. Although the sale of the school by the school board is not yet finalized, council felt it would speed up matters to formally request that the rec commission take control. However, a motion to lease the school gym to Capilano College until April 30, on the same terms as the college leased the gym from the. school board did not find as smooth sailing. Ina report from the land agent to council, it was noted that “the college would like a lease for the use of Delbrook gym till such time as they have constructed a gymnasium at their core campus, scheduled for 1983.” The college currently has no athletic facilities of its Cap residents don’t want store | Residents of the upper Capilano Road area at- tended the North Vancouver District council meeting in force Monday to oppose a proposed retail development near the corner of Capilano Road and Monstroyal _Boulevard. While the public hearing was held to discuss a rezoning from one type of retail zone to another, the residents felt the question was much more basic. More than 10 people, one with a petition of 200 names, rose to voice objections to a proposed four-business building on what was once the site of a gas station. The main objection was that the proposed development calls for one of the businesses in the building to be a convenience store. Mayor Don Bell pointed out that within = certain guidelines council had no say in what sort of businesses were installed in the building once approved. Residents felt the area was already adequately served by a nearby corner stgre and that more retail businesses were not needed. Concerns about increased traffic because of the development were also voiced. “The commercial development of this property is not wanted because of the heavy traffic that would result,” one resident said bluntly. Some residents felt that council should rezone the site to residential, something Bell said was not realistically possible. Alderman Ernie Crist made the point that while the applicant had carried out a market analysis to see whether another’ grocery store was needed in the area, the residents were not questioned in a door to door survey. Council voted to return the matter for second reading at next week's meeting. Alderman John Lakes said that the school was pur- chased for the use of the general public and it should not be dominated by one group. Alderman Gordon Rose agreed and said there was no way he would support letting Cap College have the use of the gym for the time period they request...
