FOLLOWING AN initiative by
the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, a
new endowment has been set up at
Capilano College in honor and
memory of prominent labor leader
George North and his commit-
ment to labor education and the
interests of working people.

The George North Memorial
Fund committee and the North
family have requested that the
funds be used to endow a George
North Chair in labor studies at the
college. It is the first chair to be
established in the B.C. college
system, with income providing for
scholarships, bursaries, workshops
and other special projects related
to the labor studies program.

All donations to the fund will
be matched by the college with
assistance from the Provincial
Matching Endowment Program
for post-secondary education.

North worked as a labor
reporter and educator before join-
ing the staff of the B.C. Teachers’
