Question: I am a single parent of a three-year-old child, and would like to finish my high school education and maybe take some office training courses. Is there a program available, and if so, is there any daycare assistance? Answer: To get your Grade !2 equivalency, which is equal to a diploma, you could register at the Adult Learning Centre at the Lucas Centre, 2132 Hamilton Ave. in North Vancouver. This program allows you to work at your own pace, usually during the hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., though in the surmmer hours are limited. You would be tested before admission to the program to help place you at the right level. Stu- dents must have good English language skills. Tutors are avail- able in the classrooms to give in- dividual help if needed, but basically students work in- dependenily. When you have completed the work required to bring you up to the Grade 12 level, you would register to write the provincial exam. The Adult Basic Education Program is offered free of charge, except for materials, which on average will cost about $100. If you are on GAIN, you may be able to receive help with that cost. Unfortunately, the seven-month clerical training programs Job En- try and Job Re-Entry have both been discontinued until May 1992. To find out more about the Adult Basic Education Program call 987-3086, or consult the ‘‘Joy of Learning’’ booklet which is available in libraries. Childcare facilities are not pro- vided on site. Funds to assist you with daycare costs, however, can be applied for from the daycare office of the Ministry of Social Services and Housing. Locally, you may call 660-1261 to make an appointment. To apply you must be abie to provide some iden- tification, your child’s birth certif- icate, and any proof of income, such as child support payments, or GAIN cheque stubs. Let's say that you qualify for the full subsidy amount. Based on the age of your child, and the type of daycare you choose, you could receive $15.60 per day for a maximum of 20 days of the mosth, to a total of 5312. These figures are based on care for over four hours per day. Depending on which type of care you choose (group daycare, a family daycare in someone's home, or care in your own home), the amount of subsidy varies. It is your responsibility to locate your own dayeare, and this can be time consuming.
