Hey ere almost like
family. She had nursed
the five Camada geese
goslings back to health
after they had been
found covered in oil in
False Creek and when
they were old enough
to fly she had released
them from her home at
Copper Cove.

They became a familiar
sight to just about everybody
living in the Horseshoe Bay
and Whytecliff area. The
family of five, as they were
known locally, frequently
used to return to Maynard's
home to vistt her.

But now there are only
three members left of the
family of five. For, shortly
after midnight Wednesday
two of them were attacked
and beheaded with a
machete.

A B.C. Ferries employee
called West Vancouver
police with a report that two
men appeared to be clubbing
two Canada geese on the
bank near Bay Boats at
Horseshoe Bay.

Police report that when
they attended they found
two men, one holding a

machete, standing over two
decapitated Canada geese.
Two men — Dean Allison
Pratt, aged 31, of Port
Alberni, and Arthur
Frederick Hutchinson, 29, of

and have been charged with
possession of an offensive
weapon. In = addition,
charges under the Wildlife
Act and the Migratory Bird
Act, as well as a charge of
trespass are expeci. '.

Maynard wept as she told
the News: “It has just broken
my heart. I looked after
these babies and nursed
them back through long
suffering. They were pretty
special to me.”

She had cared for the
geese since they were
handed over to the Wildlife
Rescue Association last May
when all five of them were
found in False Creek, newly
hatched and covered in tar.

“They were badly burned
by the oil,” recalis Maynard.
“They were raised by us and
attended by the Wildlife
Rescue Association until
they became adults and were
released at Copper Cove
when they were freeflying.
