8 - Friday, January 30, 1987 - North Shore News WV School Board considers . sgt Trustee Assoc. withdrawal WEST Vancouver School Board is sending a letter to the other 74 school boards in B.C. outlining the reasons the board is considering withdrawing from the B.C. School Trustees’ Association (BCSTA) and outlining needed im- provements. “This financial statement should be a cold shower to any trustee,’ board member Michael Smith said Monday, referring to the BCSTA’s 1986 financial report which showed the association to be $703,000 in debt. ‘In essence the whole thing is insolvent."’ Smith said West Vancouver trustees should go to the organiza- tion's general meeting in May and demand change or probably withdraw. ‘‘Let's tell them we want change, we want action.”’ Smith recommended mailing let- ters to the other schoo! districts. But board member Margot Furk said that after ‘‘banging my head against that wall for five years’’ she saw little hope of changing the BCSTA. West Vancouver School District will have little affect. on other boards, she said, because trustees from across B.C. view West Van- couver as being out of the mainstream. If analysed correctly, Furk said, the annual report shows that the BCSTA is $703,000 in debt and the taxpayer is going to have to pay for that through either a direct government grant or through in- creased levies demanded from school districts by the BCSTA. Furk said she agreed with the concept of an umbrella group rep- resenting provincial school trust- ees, but said withdrawing from the BCSTA is the only realistic option open to the board. The previous West Vancouver school board voted last year to leave the BCSTA by June 30, 1987, Board chairman George Suart said the BCSTA had serious pro- blems but the only way to change the organization was to work from within it. “I think we need an um- By ROBERT BEYNON Contributing Writer brella organization at this time,” Suart said, Suart, a new board member, asked if the board had approached the BCSTA executive with its con- Tickets .ABS-66I6 cerns. That (withdrawing) is not the way, in a long-term organiza- ven, to make that organization change," he said. District superintendent Bill May said it is more common for an organization's executive to ap- proach a disgruntled member when the member threatens to withdraw than for the member to approach the executive, The executive had made no attempt to approach West Vancouver School Board, May said, Cexemial Tretite.
