Members of the Vancouver Society of Change Ringers — including Edward White of West Vancouver and James Clatworthy of North Vancouver — rang a marathon round on the bells of Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver last Sunday. A band of eight: worked eight bells continuously for two hours and 53 minutes. The peal consisted of 5,040 changes of “plain bob triples” composed by Clatworthy, the bell-ringing conductor. The event was a remark- able test of endurance and concentration. Ted Lee of North Vancouver — who admits to being in his “late 80s” — is the group’s senior member and was instrumenral in founding it in 1957. The bells have been ring- ing at Holy Rosary Cathedral trom 1906 on but feil silent between 1952 and 1957. The Jan. I peal marked the 40th anniversary of the recomm ment of ringing at Holy Rosary Cathedral on New Year's Eve of 1958. You learn something from reading a book or diagrams and then being able to per- form ir and doing it using your own brains with other people. “You are ail striving for the same thing, to complete whar vou've set out to do,” Lee said. He didn’t parti the peal last week. “It was a three-hour deal, that was.” He did ring in the morning for mass at the church. Alan Ellis, one of the ringers who performed the peal, savs the art of bell ring- ing is known as campanology. “It is also known some- times as scientific change- ingi said. early days of change-ringing the pursuit was a gentlemen's form of recreation.
