Undaunted by a failed attempt to convince North Vancouver District council to stop renting public indoor space to commercial clients such as film productions, North Vancouver District Coun. Emie Crist is trying to get a similar motion through the North Vancouver Recreation Commission. The ane ie industry again intends to fight Crist. othe film industry does not want to be a big, bad ogre that kicks kids out of the pool. That’s the opposite of what we want,” said Tom Crowe, B.C. Film Commission manger of community Crist, who’s also a recre- ation commissioner, said a pro- duction filming in Ron Andrews pool recently prevent- ed swimmers from taking 2 di in the recreational facility's pool. Crist said that incident caused him to question the use of public facilities for commer- purposes. “The problem is once you start to get on that road itis like Ez abl ¥ §397 “s sf0 iectees: el piesa bed frame, 7 plese pile cores. he antes est 267 E Ist. But that subsidy increase has not happened, forcing the commission to look for other sources of revenue. But Crist said the health benefits of public recreation should not play second fiddle to commercial interests. “All in all it may be time to close the door to such adven- ture and return to the philoso- phy and the principles which gave rise to public recreation and the North Vancouver Recreation Commission in the first place,” said Crist in his notice of motion to commis- sion members. Crist’s motion was deferred until the Feb. 13 commission meeting for a staff report on the issue. Recreation commission director Gary Young said most renters are non-profit organiza- tions and groups, but movies are also shot occasionally at recreation facilities. Young said it’s the responsibility of staff to make sure commercial uses don’t affect normal program- ming. He agreed that Miller. ninm 2 ¢ CAPILANO, COURSE # BADM _ 103-81 booked the Ron Andrews pool chamber on Nov. 12 trom 6:30 a.m. to 2 pan. for $2,220. The pool, sauna, steam room, and whirlpools were available to the public until 8:30 ant. that day, said Young. He said class members were intormed “well prior” to the filming. But he added it was an unusual occurrence. “Never before have I received a compiaint irom a cent about having been incon- venienced by commercial rentals. We're pretty careful about that sort of thing. “It’s not a major problem.” He said the incident will be looked at to make sure it does- n’t happen again. Crowe said the film industry will ask to present its side to #:¢ commission, adding public and private interests should work for the benefit of both. He said movie rents can help pay for the upkeep and maintenance of recreation facilities. “The industry” has always paid its fair share for location fees and will continue to do so,” Crowe said. ” A similar motion by Crist in his position as a North Vancouver councillor sparked a rebuttal from the focal prouuc- COUN.
