First aid teams Scoop awards TWO North Shore first aid teams placed in the top ranking at the recent 1997 St. John Ambulance Lower Mainland Zone First Aid competition. Ten teams competed for the right :o rcpresent the Lower Mainland in the provincial competition held June 21 in Kelowna. “The BC Tel Bootniks placed first in the regional competition and second in the provincials. The Life Line First Aid team, ‘sponsored by the North Shore News, placed second in the Mainland competition. The award for best first aider at the Lower Mainland Zone competition went to Pam Linkewich of B.C. Ferries. The award for bes: captain went to Marty Empe; with the Life Line Team. The competition this year involved four scenarios. The first scenario was 15 minutes long and called for the treatment of an individual. The subsequent three sce- narios were 20 minutes long and entailed numerous injured people presenting a range of injuries. He was 65 years old. Ostler was born November 3, 193} in White River in the Eastern Transvaal of South Africa. It was his home for 25 years until he left to travel the world. He married Philippa in England in 1959. They ser- ted in West Vancouver where they raised five children, Catherine, Sarah, Anthony, John and Richard. In 1990, Ostler was elected a Feliow of the Instirute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in recognition of his distinguished service. - Two years later, he retired as partner of Price Waterhouse after 34 years with the rm. During his retirement years, Ostler had hoped to offer his accounting exper- tise in a developing country with CESO (Canadian Executives Services Overseas), but his failing health kept him at home. He did however, continue to be a board member of North Shore Home Support. Services, which helps provide medical support to people in their homes. He died peacefully in the presence of family on May 31, 1997 of Multiple Myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer.
