Riding the rails of B.C. history vintage JEANS WE’VE just spent a week and a bit celebrat- ing British Columbia, departing Saturday, the 7th, back home on the 1Sth, full to the brim with admiration. We've seen the impressive Canyon again, using the old road, the lovely spreads in the Cariboo, the open glory of the Peace River country, as well as the thousands upon thousands of acres of trees that swarm all over our province. Those tree-huggers seemingly never get past Squamish or they'd have some idea of how ludicrous their stance. In the Peace River Block they had recently suffered sustained rains, to the point that we had to abandon the rail car and take to a bus. On the way back to home base we also had the amazing experience of heavy rain _falling on Ashcroft, tradition: ally bone dry all year around. But for the most part they were glorious autumn days decorating themselves on the way to their tryst with winter with golden leaves, very occa- sionally some few proudly showing scarlet. We can’t touch the eastern maples when it comes to fall color, but a stand of yellow birch or ‘poplar with a clear blue sky for background is a most lovely sight. We made this journey in the embrace of B.C. Rail lines, but under the aegis of the West Coast Railway Association, a non-profit society whose only purpose lies in keeping alive the histo- ry of rail. They have done good work, and expect to continue, with the help of all those interest- ed in rail. The association's member- ship fee is nominal and we hope they survive, especially in order to be able to keep this annual, sometimes semi- annual, trip that covers the track from one end of the system to the other, and back again. Because of the way this special journey is run, it has great attraction for senior people. Days, the rail car, or cars, make the trip across and up and down the province, but every night you tie up in a town with a good hotel, or hotels. This means a great deal to us old folks, not to have to try to cope with a stand-up bath, hanging on to the cur- tains, or protecting the cut- lery and dishes trom crashing on to one’s lap at dinnertime. And instead of a lone porter or conductor during the day, the association pro- vides multiple volunteers, men and women who are also dedicated to the preservation of train travel. They are the porters and the tour guides and the providers of endless informa- tion about our stunning province, Every day a print- out is delivered to each pas- senger, outlining the day’s route and its particular signif icance, with times indicated for projected stops and photo opportunities, which on this route are indeed numerous, All of these thoughtful provisions for maximum comfort and enjoyment of MONDAY, SEPT. 23 N.S.
