FOUR years ago
retired accountant John
Moffatt of North
Vancouver received the
paging message he had
been waiting seven
months to hear. The
B.C. Transplant Society
had found a suitable
heart donor and it was
time for surgery.

An organ can only survive
afew hours.

It is essential patients be
teady for surgery at a
moment's notice,

“When you're on the list
for a heart transplant, it’s a
call you don't want to miss,”
said Moffatt.

“The pager is your umbil-
ical cord at the hospital.”

Today, Moffatr is healthi-
er than ever. He has the rest
of his life ahead of him.

freedom his pager offered
him and remembers the hi
ing trips, sailing adventures
and camping getaways he

enjoyed knowing he would-
n’t miss the doctor's call.

Moffatt chuckles as he
recalls an expedition that
caught one tour guide off
guard.

He was on an ocean fish-
ing trip near Campbell River,
an area he knew he could go
because uf B.C. TRL

guide he was on-call for a
heart tran

The fishing guide turned
pale, Moffatt said.

Currently, 335 people are
on the B.C. Transplant
Society's organ transplant
waiting list. Nine are from
North Vancouve
