NATIONAL housing
starts fell in April to
104,506 units, scason-
ally adjusted at an
annual rate, according
to Canada Mortgage
and Housing
Corporation (CMHC).

The April figure was
16.6% lower than the March
rate of 125,300 units and
4.9% lower than the Aprii
1995 rate of 109,900,

Both single-derached and
multiple markets slowed last
month. Single-derached con-
struction dropped 9.9% to
52,800 units, while multiple
building starts declined 32.1%
to 29,200 units.

“Contributing —_ factors
included weak consumer con-
fidence levels and a large
inventory of vacant multiple
dwellings,” said CMHC
economist Michel Laurence,
“Overall, construction trends
confirm CMHC’s forecast
made in February.”

British Columbia posted
fewer urban. starts. Multiple
unit construction was 19.7%
lower in April than in March.
Starts of single-detached units
were also down.
