COMPETITIVE DRAMA
festivals can be traced back
thousands of years but that
does not make them totally
legitimate.

At least the ancient Greeks
had, sometimes anyway, separate
categories for drama and come-

dies,

How can one watch a tradition-
al European comedy overlaid with
elements of English farce and say
whether it is “better” than a short,
delicately balanced, U.S. two-
handed drama?

But that is what adjudicator
John Cooper must do next week
when he chooses the Best Overall
Production from the Theatre B.C.
North Shore Zone Festival Of
Plays to be staged at Presentation
House,

Theatre B.C. is the umbrella
Organization to which most of the
province’s community theatre ~

, Broups belong.

It provides a network of infor-
mation and training opportunities
as well as arranging the annual
drama festival.

The province is divided into
geographic regions and profes-
sional adjudicators determine
which plays will represent their

'..zone at the finals.

# Scapino! by Frank Dunlop and
Jim Date: The plot is based on a
play by French dramatist Moliére,
who in turn was working with a
comedic structure that can be
traced back to early Roman come-
dies.

The role of the wily Scapino is
an opportunity for a comedic tour
de force but watch for how well
this young ensemble brings to life
the world of the play.

Wednesday, April 26.
8 Dark Brown by Philip Johnson:
Self-described as a melodrama, his
play dates from the ‘40s and owes
little to the great traditions of plays
like The Silver King.

But style will be everything
with this production with the
heavy foreshadowing either creat-
ing Hitchcockian suspense or
campy comedy depending on the
director's choice. ;

T hope they play it straight,
although the central character's
resolution then becomes problem-
atic.

ter example of the.type of English
theatre that Osborne rebelled
against with Look Back In Anger.

blocks thrown up by Sara? Can
we empathize with this frenetic
East Coast WASP?

B Look Back In Anger by John
Osborne: a truly great turning
point in English theatre, but one
Osborne spent his life living
down.

’ The play that gave rise to the
expressions “kitchen sink drama”
and “angry young man.”

A modern Canadian audience
will not be aware of post-war
English angst.

To some extent this production
will need to create that larger
world of the play.

about and why is the play called
Look Back in Anger?

& Autunn Leaves by Julianne
Bernstein: a subtle two-hander
dealing with the separation of two
sisters and separation from memo-
ry. If it works it hurts, and by
hurting illustrates the power of
theatre to make accessible a for-
cign experience,
Gi Sorry, Wrong Number by
Louise Fletcher; The concentra-
tion on plot is certainly dramatic,
but with only one character and a
lot of voices this may not be the-
atre so much as radio.

B Thin Ice by Bunuta Rubess and

Beverley Cooper, a non-competi-

tive entry from Pemberton sec-
ondary school and the only script
I have yet to read, will be fol-
lowed by the presentation of
awards for acting, directing,
design and technical merit as well
as the choice of the North Shore
Zone winner,
