crossing is a suspension, or haug-
ing, bridge. Two towers support
two 16-inch cables that the road
deck hangs from. The cables are
anchored at both ends of the
bridge in massive concrete blocks.

According to Buckland, the
towers and cables — the vital
elements — will last well into the
21st century. Most of the major
work upgrading the bridge has
been done on these elements.

The road is another matter.

The major point of roadway
deterioration is al the south end.

Standing under the bridge at
this point, shafts of light stream
through the concrete planks that
make up the three lane-roadway
deck.

When asked about the life span

of the bridge — a 50-year limit
was placed on the bridge upon
construction — Buckland said that
upgrades done on the — bridge
through the ‘70s and ‘80s have
added extra time to the safe
operation of the bridge.

More than $30 million has been
spent on bridge rehabilitation in
the past 47 years and the
Buckland report says a further $10
million could be required in the
next five years.

the bridge falling down?
